Reginald Earl Payne, II

Reginald Earl Payne, II, is a Ph.D. student in the Department of Music at Yale University. He holds a Master of Arts in Religion and Music from Yale University and is an alumnus of the University of Illinois, where he earned the Bachelor of Science, Master of Education, and Master of Music degrees. His academic work explores the intersections of theology and choral pedagogy in Black sacred musical traditions, with particular attention to the cultural and pedagogical role of gospel music in Black communities.

At Yale Divinity School, Reginald serves as Director of Music for Andover Newton Seminary, where he supports the seminary's musical life and worshipping community. As both a scholar and musician, his work bridges research, performance, and ministry, reflecting a deep commitment to the study and practice of Black sacred music.

Through his interdisciplinary work, Reginald integrates musicology, religious studies, and education, pairing academic inquiry with creative expression. His experience as a choral musician and conductor informs his scholarship and leadership, and he remains dedicated to cultivating community through the transformative power of music and worship.
